Roadtripping Honfluer France to Dartmoor National Park

Roadtripping France

On the Road again…from Honfluer France to Dartmoor National Park England

Loving spending more time in France! Not to mention the food!!!  And yep I see it as my obligation as a travel blogger to try as much food as possible where we visit LOL.

My waist line may not agree with this but mmmmm my taste buds are totally onboard!

Weekly youtube video click here

We stopped off on our way to Honfluer and picked up the most beautiful Lemon Tart and Triple Choc mouse complete with wafer and choc shards and mini Malteser balls in the bottom all in glass jar. That was a morning tea / just have to do it moment. By the way – Miss B is totally on board with all of the above too. (Surprise!)

This week also saw us cross back into England for our final month on the road. With so many great adventures planned there is no need to be getting all soppy about this years roadtrip nearly being over.  Lots of travel friends to catch up with and getting some quality time with my bestie as she got holidays YAY!!!

So what happened this week….

August 28

Honfluer Port

Apart from the wonderful desserts we consumed, we headed to Honfluer and what a surprise.  To be perfectly honest we had picked it as they have a campground with power for 11 Euro a night!  This is in a perfect location, walk into the city and explore, which we did.  Very thankful we got straight out and had a look around as it rained the next day.

So gorgeous and beautiful old buildings, lots of quirky shops

Honfluer Market

and lovely cobblestone streets.  It truly is a beautiful town to just meander through the streets and absorb the atmosphere.

Honfluer is in the Normandy region of France on the estuary where the Seine river meets the English Channel.  The harbour is lined with 16-18th century townhouses and been the subject of many artists inspiration over the years.

A lovely older French couple parked beside us and we had a great time practising our French and arm gestures. A lot of fun!

August 29

Rainy day and we didn’t need to get up! Is there anything better than laying in bed listening to the rain on the roof knowing you don’t need to get up!

We just chilled out today, doing work and schoolwork, blog ect. Nice to keep on top of everything and slow the pace.

Miss B is getting very excited, tomorrow is her birthday!

August 30

Woke to beautiful sunshine for our Miss B’s 11th birthday.  Can not believe how fast time goes, we celebrated her 10th birthday in France too which is very fitting as it is her favourite country. (Keep in mind she LOVES food so pretty much anywhere she gets to eat a lot and it tastes good is really up there! )

She is really grateful for the travel we are doing as a family and had no expectations of presents on the day.  We had of course had the day in Paris last week for her visiting Mona Lisa and Arc de Triomphe but always nice to get something on the day.  We gave her, her very first Swiss Army knife. She loves creating and carving in wood and sticks and has commented on so many other kids we met on the road that have had one. So, we knew we were on a winner.  She LOVED it!!

Our family from Australia, video called her on Whatsapp which made her day!  Extra special knowing we are going to see them soon as we have tickets to fly from one side of Australia to the other then week or so after we arrive home to visit them.

Our lovely friends who we are seeing next week Wheelers on the Bus had given me a card and gift to surprise her with on the day when we visited earlier in our trip and she was over the moon!

We headed for Calais where we would stay in readiness to catch the ferry tomorrow morning. Nice long drive and arrive in light, cooked dinner and early night.

August 31

Really good time for departure around 11:35am, slept in, have breakfast and off we went. Had to be there an hour before departure, nice and easy.

No dramas other than the usual questions at customs, when is your flight home, how do you afford the holiday/travel, what did or do you do for a living/finance, where are you stopping off on the way home ect ect.

Seven Sisters Chalk Cliffs

Nice calm weather so an uneventful crossing, it is so close you don’t realise how close France and England are!

Really nice coming into Dover with the sun shining on the white cliffs.

After arriving we drove to the Seven Sisters in Sussex, set of chalk cliffs by the English Channel.

So beautiful pity about the rather expensive cost of parking to enjoy them and lack of it. Quick walk up along Beachy head then back on the road.

Stopped in at Tesco, got my packets of fresh shelled peas = happy mum!

September 1

Big one off the England list today with a visit to Stonehenge!  It was a weekend and the

Stonehenge

English Heritage do a great job of incorporating events over the summer months at various sites.  This really enhances the learning and understanding for kids. Miss B was understandably pretty stoked to be informed it was Grand Feast day!  LOL.

We had a fantastic time! They had lots of cool information, recipes and cooking methods that would of been used back in the Neolithic periods.  Miss B got to grind wheat to make bread, see camp fires and cooking demonstrations.  It really was fantastic.  Not to mention the actual Stonehenge!

Great weather plays a big part when visiting the large ticket items and we were rapt. From

Miss B grinding grain to make bread

the organisation of the buses up to site, the audio tour included in our membership

(necessary in my opinion) and then return bus trip.

You can take as long as you like and many were having a picnic up there at some point around the structure which I thought was a really great idea.

As a campervan it was a relief to have designated parking easy access to the entry.

When leaving there we saw a group of Deer on the side of the motorway just grazing – could not believe it. Keep an eye out at all times, for both theirs and your safety.

After a wonderful Tom Tom (GPS) adventure we finally arrived at our wild camp for the night in Portland / Dorset area.  On arriving we met the most lovely collection of new friends! It is one of our favourite things about roadtripping and wild camping.  People are genuine and have a sense of ‘real’ about them just love it.  Up till LATE, kids all playing, adults all talking and laughing.  Just love it.

September 2

Portland, England

Gorgeous view and Miss B was foraging for Blackberries with a friend she met last night.  They did an excellent job and after a quick wash provided a lovely healthy morning tea.

Had a great morning chatting with Atinamoon a gorgeous lady who has a camper similar to Betsy that she gets away in as often as she can. She is based in England and has a popular youtube channel.  Really hope to cross paths again.  The second cigarette lighter that we installed on an extension lead for the Waeco/portable compressor fridge fused (we know why but I am not allowed to dob so I won’t. but it wasn’t me, just saying!!)

Rang around and let the fingers do the walking, it is crazy what you can find online!!

A quick trip to Halfords and we found a replacement.  It was a Sunday so although an electrical store would have been able to help they were all closed.  It is not a standard fuse.  At Halfords just a quick tip, it was not in the usual section so always ask!

Relieved that we would not risk losing the food in the fridge or worse – warm beer!!

Today in Australia, is Fathers Day (Happy Fathers day dad!!) so I convinced Scrooge Mcduck (aka Hubby) that we HAD to take him to an English pub (soft spot, easy sell) for lunch.  We picked The Kings Arms and we got to try our first Yorkshire Pudding! Accompanied by a lamb roast Arrrghhhh been so long! Really nice lunch and great weather to sit in the outdoor garden area.

Finishing lunch and nearly having to be rolled out of there we headed to our wildcamp.  A lovely walk before dinner and lock down of camper, the nights are getting chillier!

September 3

Off to Okehampton Castle in Devon. Loving our English Heritage membership and boy

Okehampton Castle

have we got value out of it!

It was built between 1068 and 1086 by Baldwin Fitzgilbert. Audio guide included again, love that! Bit dreary weather but held off till we had explored the castle.

Lovely town but as usual barely anywhere to park to enjoy it.

Dartmoor National Park

Next we set off for a drive in Dartmoor National Park.  It is well known as a scenic drive and popular with artists for this reason.  The rolling green fields and farms, loose animals Sheep, Goats, Ponies and we even managed to see Highland Cattle! Love them and was pretty excited to see them again.

The Tom Tom got a little excited and took us down some even skinnier roads than usual but we really enjoyed our drive and there is no doubt, it was beautiful.

Until next week…

What did we take

If you are interested in what we took, electronics, kitchen and all things we needed for the duration of our roadtrip click here. (we are slowly adding each week as we have data/time)

Having done a three and half month roadtrip in South Europe in 2017 and Northern Europe Roadtrip in 2018 we were pretty confident in what we would need’this time. Also, what worked and what we would not bother taking again.
