Apps & Maps what did we take roadtripping UK & Europe

Those of you who already follow us, will know we are lovers of the good old fashioned roadtrip and camping!  E really researched what Apps & Maps for roadtripping UK & Europe we needed. We bought a campervan in England in 2017, known as Betsy. We go back each Spring/Summer to explore more of both the United Kingdom and Europe. You can see more of our adventures in various blog posts of Southern Europe2017 and UK, Scandinavia, Baltics 2018 and a weekly youtube diary of youtube videos.  A video of this post is available here.

BIG lovers of wild camping!  Betsy, (the campervan) is self contained and we have added multiple improvements to make life easier on the road.  More on that later.

Apps & Maps for Roadtripping UK & Europe

We have fine tuned this list over the last two years of roadtripping UK & Europe visiting over 20 countries.  These are the ones we consider to be must haves.

Road Atlas Europe

There is nothing like having a hard copy map!wild camping europe

Call us old fashioned but for route planning, discussing with others you meet on your travels and also checking out the best route after a detour! This has been a fantastic resource and really affordable!

We really like a spirax spine too for manageability on the road!

You can buy one by clicking here

Camper Contact

Finding Aires, Sostas, camp sites all over Europe this is one of three apps we use and would not be without. camping europe app

Sites in more than 50 countries. Photos and reviews of each site with a date so you can get current information to base your choice on.

Apple Itunes and Google Play

Park 4 Night

Another camp sites, aires and sostas App, but lets face it we all planning a driving holiday in europeneed to know where we are sleeping so these are important!

Again user based so the more reviews and photos the better.

Apple itunes and Google Play

Search for Sites

This is No.3 on the must have list for finding camp sites, aires and sostas.  But, this is No.1 if you are roadtripping in the United Kingdom only.

THE app if you are in England, Scotland and Wales but we also referred to it in some parts of Europe too and found it helpful.

Searchforsites has a website too which we found better than the app.

Maps Me

An offline maps app that we use both in Australia and overseas. must have travel apps

This is an extremely helpful App.  You can pinpoint your location or the vehicle (handy when prospecting, hiking, bushwalking, or at new shopping centres lol) and go off exploring.  When it is time to go back to the vehicle/your accommodation just hit the pin you placed and it will guide you back – ALL offline.  So helpful, particularly in areas where there is no reception.  Great for keeping track of GPS co-ordinates for blog and or documentating for later reference too.

Available on Apple itunes and Google Play

Emergency – Where are U

So, our roadtrip in 2018 we did over 17,500km.  It is fair to say there would have been moments during this roadtrip, if we had to explain where we are in an emergency, may have been difficult.

This App allows you to contact rescuers in emergency situations and tell them your exact location – resulting in the rescue bit happening quicker! In an emergency, the last thing you want is to be trying to type in GPS co-ordinates, after you have worked out what they are!

Apple itunes or Google Play

Translator App

There is a few available and just find what works for you, one of the main ones is Google Translate App – Apple itunes and Google Play

Duolingo

language travel appWe use Duolingo to learn languages. It’s easy to understand and great to be improving language skills when you travel a lot!

Apple itunes and Google Play

Fun Apps

Countries Been – pretty obvious what this one is for!  Apple Itunes and Goolge Play

What Facebook Groups should I join (other than Cake and Eat it 3 of course)

Motorhome Adventures (includes campervans)
