Exploring Denmark

Visiting Denmark with kids

Hello Denmark!

What a week this has been. Travel is amazing and it is no secret that we love it, in many different forms roadtripping, backpacking ect. Excitement as new cities are explored, new friends made and stories shared, this week had it all.

Some stories will have to wait until we return to be shared. There are so many and only so much data and time to get it all down, or uploaded as the case may be!

Kids Travel Worksheet – Denmark

If you, or someone you know, is off to Denmark with Kids – they will love this worksheet! 11 Pages included.

Suitable for Ages 7- 14

June 26

Off to explore the town of Ribe (pronounced Ree-buh – go figure) Denmark’s oldest town.  Very beautiful town with a lot of history.  Gorgeous weather made this a joy to stroll through the cobblestone streets of 16th century half timbered houses.  The building of the Church of Our Lady began in 1150 and was completed between 1225 and 1250.  Made of tufa stone, of volcanic origin brought in from the Rhine area, German sandstone and Jutlandic granite. The cathedral can be seen from miles away.

With a dramatic history of Vikings, kings, queens, witches, floods and fires.

For the viking enthusiast there is a Viking Centre that shows how the town was when it was founded 1300 years ago.

June 27

Legoland! Childhood dream ticked off the bucket list, visiting Legoland.  It was beautiful weather and we managed to see everything we wanted to see. Very thankful the lines were minimal and we got to participate in the world record attempt of the highest lego tower!

This was a lot of fun working together to have a bit of Cake and Eat it 3 in the tower!

There is a whole individual blog post click here and youtube clip click here on our day at Legoland if you missed it.

Leaving Billund, we stayed in a fantastic wild camping spot on the river with toilets, details of all camping spots are provided in our page Europe – where we stayed click here.

June 28

Making our way to Silkeborg where parking can prove to be a bit difficult but we really wanted to meet the Tollund Man.  A beautiful walk along the water watching the boats and the town come to life for the day.

Tollund Man was found on 6th May 1950 while two brothers were cutting peat just west of Silkeborg.  He was 40 years old when buried wearing only a leather cap made of 8 pieces of sheep hide sewn together, a simple leather belt and a plaited leather rope around his neck some 2350 years ago.

When his body had been removed and thoroughly inspected they were able to confirm he had eaten 12-24 hours before death.  His stomach contained up to 30 different types of seed mainly barley, flax and willow-herb boiled as a porridge. Amazing what they can find out!

There are many detailed displays showing tools, clothing even hair styles! Kids can try on a chain mesh top (weighing 10kg) giving them an idea of the weight the knights would wear.

Included in your admission to the museum is a pottery exhibition, we found an amazing piece that we believe may have been an inscense burner which we loved from 1865.

Really good value for money visiting Silkeborg Museum.

Making our way across the first toll bridge, 18km bridge linking East Denmark to West Denmark at a cost of AUS$55 (240DKK as at June 2018) yikes.

We paid the toll by debit card after crossing on the East side.

Trelleborg Museum

First stop on the East side was Trelleborg Museum, the Viking ring fortress.  FREE entry inside museum with displays and dressups. As well as a longhouse that you are allowed in to see an example of how they would have lived.  Information boards for reading and lots of open ground for the kids to run.

Trelleborg was built for military purposes however most of the time it was peaceful.  It is believed that the fortress was home to approximately 500 people including skilled craftsman, women, warriors and children.

We stopped at a rest area off the motorway as we were getting very close to Copenhagen and it was late.  As a general rule we do not stay at rest areas on motorways.

June 29

Started the day on a bad note.  Someone broke into our campervan in the night through the passenger side door.  Can not believe that we didn’t wake and they were so close to Brett’s feet!  Looking for positives, it could have been a lot worse.  There were a number of items not far from what they did grab, that would have been very costly and inconvenient.

Being seasoned travellers this sort of thing happens, we know it does as, we have met with so many people who have had it happen.  Changes were made to to where certain items are placed especially at night and we purchased a few items to help raise our attention if the doors are opened while we sleep.  We will also be looking into additional locks or securing the doors at night. We did a youtube video click here on what happened if your interested.

Onward we go!

This does not alter our plans in the slightest.  We appreciate everyone who reached out to ensure we were ok.  Maybe an upside to having slept through it, no physical encounter with the bad guys!

So we filed a police report, everyone nearly speaks English so not too much drama.

Helsingor

Then off to explore Helsingor.  This week of 29 June – 1 July is like schoolies week in Australia.  All the seniors have finished their studies and celebrating.  To celebrate each class all piles into the back of decorated trucks, wearing white with their white, sailor like caps on.  The day and into the night is spent driving to each class mates house.

They stop have snacks, refreshments, music and then onto the next one.  While driving around the streets music is BLARING, horns are blaring, there are people that give gifts and shout congratulations.  Some of the trucks have signs that say toot 2 times and we will do ‘X’ toot 3 times and we will do Ý’.  Looks heaps of fun and Miss B was keen to finish year 12 now LOL!  Our friend who is Danish told us years ago it used to be a horse and cart and a little less drinking involved.

Kronborg Castle

We walked around the town, which is lovely and made our way out to Kronborg castle.  Lovely grounds that you can walk around without having to pay to go in.

You can see Sweden clearly from the waters edge.  Had no idea they were that close, especially given how much they charge to ferry you over there.

Great walk around and through the castle grounds.  Following our stop in Helsingor we found a gorgeous wild camp in Farum.  So beautiful we set off for a walk to explore.  Meeting a lovely lady with her two children in the park we discovered she spoke perfect English and we went off exploring together.  On arriving back at Betsy, we were invited to come back for coffee which led to lots of talking, kids playing and then dinner – the perfect way to finish off the day.

June 30

Copenhagen city, wow just WOW.  Really, really enjoyed hours and hours walking around the streets of this beautiful city.  Of course we viewed the Little Mermaid, multiple amazing buildings and the canals are just picturesque.  Clean, easy to navigate and a joy to visit.

The gardens of the Royal Library are beautiful.  Originally is was the naval port of King Christian IV, we stumbled upon it by accident and I am glad we did.

The palace, Churches, Kastellets a five star fortress and so many amazing buildings.

We really loved our time in Copenhagen.

July 1

Back into Copenhagen to visit a worldschooling family!  So great to talk to other worldschooling families and hear their plans!  Lots of talking, brainstorming, sharing resources.  A walk to the park we really enjoyed our time with Luna and her daughter (and the wonderful offer of a shower!)

That morning I had bought the ticket for the Oresund Bridge over to Sweden 400DKK.  Eeeek.  You have to buy them if purchasing online (which gives you a discount) a minimum of 30 mins before you intend to cross.

Border Control!

After passing through the gates there is Border Control.  Following our break-in earlier this week we had placed our important documents in a hard to get to area, so we were guided off to the side so we could retrieve them.

On inspection, it became apparent that when we went from UK to France they had not stamped our entry into France which would show our Schengen visa dates. The border police were very helpful and there is a whole individual blog post about this click here if you missed it.

Glad to have that issue resolved we headed for our wild camp for the night and settled in.  Miss B got some reading in and we called it a day and went to bed.

July 2

All of us are very excited to be in Sweden.  Brett has had it on his list for many years and very happy to finally be here. So lovely we do think its cute that their arrow signs on corners and roundabouts are Blue and Yellow like their flag!!

Lots of fields and farms, moose signs but no sightings of moose yet!  Also, the first shop or store we saw on arriving was IKEA lol.  We do want to visit one while here to try their meatballs – many people have said very worthwhile and cheap.

Supermarkets we have seen so far are Coop and Lidl.

Lots and lots of speed cameras here, little zones where they drop down and up and a camera – very cheeky!

Kalmar Castle

Kalmar is a lovely stop, walk around the city (which has a large shopping centre too).   We found a quaint second hand bookshop but unfortunately, no miniature books.

Brett bought his customary local bottles of beer so he can not only enjoy the contents but keep the labels for his amazing collection back home.

Although we did not go in to Kalmar Castle just due to how many castles we have seen and the cost, but it looked amazing.  Walking through the cemetery, which is amazing in itself, you had beautiful views of the castle.

Over yet another bridge (but no fee for this one) towards our wild camp for the night we passed so many windmills.  A beautiful drive parallel to the Baltic Sea made for nice views.

On an immature note we are all cracking up at the constant use of the word FART in this area of Europe, we have seen Ausfart, Utfat, Dinfart, Middlefart…..come on you laughed too!!

Until next week …

What did we take

If you are interested in what we took, electronics, kitchen and all things we needed for the duration of our roadtrip click here. (we are slowly adding each week as we have data/time)

Having done a three and half month roadtrip in South Europe in 2017 and Northern Europe Roadtrip in 2018 we were pretty confident in what we would need’this time. Also, what worked and what we would not bother taking again.
