South Australia

This is where we will put places we stayed while in South Australia.  We will add to this list whenever we spend more time there.

Those that follow Cake and Eat it 3 know we primarily look for free camps and longer stay areas where possible.

If you are travelling with kids be sure to check out our Kids Travel Worksheets.

Established 1859 on the Murray river.  They have a great reputation for being good food.
Lovely spot, weather permitting you can go through the gate and follow the small track to the rivers edge.  Showers available at the Overland Corner Hotel for a small cost.  Also bread and milk.
Boat ramp for those of you with tinnies, canoes and kayaks for easy access.

Sandy Creek Hotel

In the Barossa a country pub owned by a lovely couple who offer overnight accommodation for self contained rigs in their carpark for patrons of the restaurant or pub.  I had the best dinner, chicken supreme – Yummo!
Love supporting small towns and this pub celebrated it’s 150th birthday on Christmas day 2017.

Best Playground and you can camp if self contained

Great location in St Kilda for exploring Adelaide.  Suitable for larger rigs. Kids will LOVE this stop.  One of the best playgrounds we have visited in Australia!

You have to be fully self contained to stay here, there is a dump point and boat ramp.

Parham Point

Free camp called Port Parham on Wikicamps
Great Spot small town of Dublin close but no major supermarket.  Well known for Blue Swimmer Crabs which you can catch by walking out across the flats and wading in knee high water.

Nearest dump point in Dublin in street behind toilets in lion park.  Generally pretty flat, bottom part floods in heavy rain.  Toilet, Water, Bins and BBQ’s on site.

Support the local Parham community club, I am told they have cheap meals – will check this out when we come back (found out too late).

Max stay 14 days, good behaviour can see this extended.

Iron Knob (Donation box)

An old iron ore mining town on the Eyre Peninsula, they have gone to a lot of trouble to provide facilities and they are notably good.
Fantastic outdoor roofless shower fantastic!  Cold water only but was just lovely!
Toilets, dump point, camp kitchen, BBQ, undercover seating area and playground next door
You will see some golden oldie cars here too, very cool!

Eyre’s Waterhole

We stopped here as we were studying Edward John Eyre and his expedition.

It actually was a great spot, close to Streaky Bay and flat but no services at all.

Point Labatt

Just beautiful and we will be back to spend more time here.  Make no mistake, there are absolutely no services provided.  This is so natural and beautiful and exactly why we spend all the time and money on becoming self sustainable.  This is a free camp for self contained rigs 5.4klms from Point Labatt sea lion lookout.
Some great 4×4 tracks around this area too.  We took both the Motorhome and the 4×4 here and yes there was corrugations, so if they are not your thing you may like to ask a local when was the last time the track was graded.  It also may not be as pleasant if there has been heavy rainfall.

Cool facts about Australian sea lions

Pups weigh around 7kg at birth (ouch) and take to the ocean for the first time at about 4 weeks of age

They depend on their mothers milk for the first year

They eat squid, fish, octopus, cuttlefish, crabs and crayfish

Females grow up to 1.5m long and 120kg and grey with a yellow to cream underbelly.  Males grow up to 2m long and 400kg and are dark brown in colour.

Haslam Jetty

A popular stopping point before hitting the Nullabor, Haslam Jetty although windy when we were there.  $5 donation per night (remember to support these sites so they continue to be available)
Known as Haslam RA on wikicamps.  Clotheslines, Toilets and bin at boat ramp.
Water at park part of boatramp, we were told it was ok, we used it was ok in our opinion but we have a filter.
Gazebo in park near jetty.  Only telstra reception in front of loos towards main road marginally on the road into boatramp/parking. Lol.
