What a joy it was, to see the wildflowers of Western Australia 2019. It has long been on our list. Even though we were a bit earlier than normally recommended (third week of August) we were not disappointed. Not at all. Not one tiny bit.
Carpets of wildflowers spread across desert sands, in the red sand that is, the outback of Western Australia. Fields of colour, white, purple, yellow as far as the eye can see.
Nature is extraordinary! In an environment that takes no prisoners in the heat of our summer sun, in winter holds the magic that is Wildflower Season.
Where did our WA Wildflowers adventure take us
Chasing warmer weather we headed north from Perth (will share those adventures soon) to Geraldton.
We drove across to Yalgoo, where the outback begins. Yalgoo Caravan Park was fabulous, affordable and the hosts could not do enough to make our stay more enjoyable.
Our Wildflower adventures then took us free camping through beautiful outback country towns of Mullewa, Morawa, Perenjori, Carnamah, Coorow Shire and Moora. A special shout out to some of the lovely and helpful staff at information centres along our route. They truly made learning about the flowers interesting and their assistance finding all the ones of my wish list was appreciated greatly!
What can you expect to see in Wildflower WA Season 2019
So the best advice I can pass on, if you see a wildflower you would like to photograph, stop and take the shot. Each region has a variety of wildflowers and you may not see it again!
You are guaranteed to see beautiful native flowers pretty much wherever you go in the Wildflower Way / Region in wildflower season.
Typically, the best time of year is September. But, we were there in August and were not disappointed!
Vast arrays of wattle can be seen regularly adding a splash of vibrant yellow along outback roads.
Wildflowers of Western Australia Checklist
I loved trying to identify all the beautiful wildflowers we found in Western Australia. I put together this free ID checklist for wildflower way in Western Australia to help you keep a log of what you found, where and what it is.
Wreath Wildflower
We were lucky enough to find the 'Wreath Flower' on the side of the road (I have GPS co-ordinates!) In between Mullewa and Morawa. Scattered here and there in this one stretch and Miss B and I did not know where to begin. They are just amazing, nature at its best.
Wreath flowers grow between 50-150mm in height and spread out to one metre in diameter!!
Luckily there was not many others on the road as I was stopping regularly to jump out and snap some more pictures. Miss B would correct me and say 'all the time'. Every one of them beautiful and amazing, a vibrant stand of life and colour in the red desert sand.
Everlastings or Paper-daisy
These beautiful wildflowers provide a blanket of colour from deep pink (nearly red) through to pale pink to pure white, with a yellow or black centre. Each flower head can grow up to 6cm in diameter. Standing between 20-60cm high they are easy to spot.
You will find these throughout most of the wildflower region.
Wildflower Orchids
Searching for these hidden gems was all part of the fun!
Each orchid is so unique. We were lucky enough to find Spider orchids, Donkey orchids and Cowslip orchids. There are multiple colours in the spider orchids and various regions to find each of them.
Our favourite Spider, Donkey orchids were spotted in Coorow on their wildflower trail and Cowslip orchids at Westways Wildflower Farm and 4WD Trail 31km from Moora. Luckily for us, being earlier meant I was able to spot a Scarlet Featherflower in late bloom which is ideally spotted in July.
