roadtrip of goldfieldsDue to the amazing history and lack of reception while in some of these remote locations, we have created a kids travel worksheet to take with you.

This 14 page worksheet, will take you town for town.

Covering the history, facts, some science and more to ensure your kids get the most out of their roadtrip.

Menzies

roadtripping with kidsOnce a bustling gold mine centre, it has a beautiful town hall that deserves a photoRoadtripping Western Australia and for families the opportunity to stop and let the kids burn off some energy at the playground!

Interpretive signs tell you about the history of the town.

The absolute star attraction, not far out of Menzies and not to be missed, is Lake Ballard.  We have a whole post on Lake Ballard, including a youtube on

Free Camping Lake Ballard
Lake Ballard, Menzies

the camping area.

Famous for the 51 unique sculptures on the salt plains of Lake Ballard, by Antony Gormley, an English sculptor.

The sculptures are made from digital scans taken of residents in or around Menzies then reduced by 66%.

Fantastic opportunity to see this natural gallery in outback Australia. It is a great place to free camp.  For full details on camping check out our post here.

Not a lot in Kookynie, but you can meet Willie, the horse at the pub! We think that is pretty cool, he loves a snack, so make sure you come prepared!

All we had was a carrot but he seemed to enjoy it which made Miss B Happy.

With a current population of around 13 people and a grand hotel built in 1902 be sure to include this small country town on your roadtrip.

Visit GwaliaWhat an amazing place to visit! From the ghost town of the miner’s cottages where you can walk in and experience living conditions as they were in 1911.  Visit Hoover house (designed by Herbert Hoover who went on to become the 31st president of USA) overlooking the open mine and the Gwalia museum.

This town also has it’s own post, basically because there is so much to see in Gwalia.  Check it out here.

Just 3.4km down the road from Gwalia is Leonora. Discovered and named by John Forrest in 1896.  Leonora Shire facebook page is great to check out ahead of your trip.

You will have the opportunity to see our beautiful Wedge tailed eagle in action.  They are magnificent to watch, but a word of warning, they will not necessarily get out of your way if they are on the road having some dinner.

Please slow down and give them time to acknowledge your there.

Leonora is home to the Leonora Golden Gift – Australia’s richest mile running race along the main street held annually.

Leinster, Western Australia

Very unique, Leinster is known as a closed town.  Meaning all residents are employees or contractors of the mining company BHP.

They mine high grade nickel sulphide ore.

Laverton, Western Australia

Gateway to Australia’s longest shortcut!  Not kidding, this outback town can connect you 2800km through the heart of Australia to Queensland!

The explorers hall of fame which is part of the Great beyond visitor centre is worth while checking out.

Sandstone, Western Australia

Visiting SandstoneSandstone is a popular place for gold prospectors.  The town was first settled in 1894 as part of the gold rush.

Check out ‘London Bridge’ rock formation made out of weather basalt, believed to be approximately 350 million years old (spring chicken).

Mount Magnet, Western Australia

The oldest continuous gold mining town in Western Australia (I am sensing a theme inDriving in outback Australia these Australian outback towns).

Mount Magnet Visitor centre is well worth a visit with an impressive rocks and gems collection on display.

While here, a trip to see the Granites, a 15m high rock formation.  The Granites is a place of strong cultural significance to the Badimia tribe.  Their old carvings and paintings on the rocks at Walganna Rocks have been dated at 9,000 years old!

Something to mindful of, on your northern goldfields to Geraldton roadtrip, when driving in the outback, the road trains (trucks with multiple trailers) can get up to 60 metres long!  Be very careful to allow enough room if overtaking, especially if you are towing a caravan.

What a surprise from this little town.  The hosts of the Yalgoo caravan park where great, a surprise meetup by some good travelling friends added to this stop and extended our stay.

Known as the town where the outback begins, it has an interesting bit of history that surprised us.  Did you know that on the 13th of February 1903, at Solomons Lowns store Australia’s first parcel bomb, yes you heard right, parcel bomb was delivered addressed to Solomon Lowns.  He opened it and blew off his hand!  Yikes.

We were lucky enough to experience Yalgoo in late August when wildflower season was well under way.  A quick drive south meant we were able to see the famous wreath flower (pictured above).

Arriving in Geraldton we have completed our Northern Goldfields to Geraldton roadtrip!

The visitor centre is on the water at Geraldton, parking for rigs within easy walking distance and a great playground for the kids.  There is a dump point available (although was out of action when we went through).

Bitter sweet, there is something beautiful about outback Australia and the expanse of open road in front of you, the red dirt and the clear skies with stars spread out like a blanket above.

We LOVED our outback adventure, there will be more. Until next time, happy travels.
