We ended up spending six months in Kalgoorlie, Brett stopped and did a bit of work so we got out and about quite a bit, met some lovely people and had some great experiences.
Heading to the goldfields always has the sense of excitement, it normally means we are going to do some prospecting and try our luck at finding GOLD!
When it's summer it's very hot, when it's winter, it's very cold. So if you can visit in Autumn or early spring - you are generally on a winner!
Where is Kalgoorlie
For those of you new to Western Australia, Kalgoorlie is in the goldfields, just under 600km from Perth in Western Australia.
It is also known as the Goldfields, for the obvious reason, there is gold there! Many people go prospecting to try their luck.
How to get there
If you are coming from Perth, you can drive there, if done in one stretch it will take approximately 7 hours straight.
There is a train, called The Prospector which leaves from East Perth for just under $100 return per adult.
For more information contact TransWA
Kalgoorlie Accommodation
There are three caravan parks, we stayed at The Prospector caravan park in Sommerville.
Other options include the Kalgoorlie caravan park and the Discovery caravan park, which is in Boulder. Some of these offer cabin accommodation too, if you want to come by train.
In all cases, take security seriously, lock your valuables including you car, up at night from opportunistic thieves.
If you require hotel accommodation, there are plenty of options, including

Lots of interesting information and as part of your trail you get to visit one of Miss B’s favourite places in Kalgoorlie!
The WA School of mines mineral museum.
The museum houses some 3000 specimens of minerals and ores as well as a replica of “The Golden Eagle”, an amazing 32 177 gram gold nugget discovered near Coolgardie in 1931.
When you finish the tour, it concludes at the Museum of the Goldfields.
Museum of the Goldfields
For a gold coin donation we believe this is worthwhile. If nothing else but to see the coolgardie safe.
The Coolgardie safe uses evaporation to keep the food inside cool, while protecting it from flies and scavengers. It was invented in the late 1890s on the Western Australian goldfields, an invention credited to a local contractor named Arthur Patrick McCormick. Amazing!!
Any of our 4×4 lovers would know they still make hessian water carriers that use a similar method to this day.
As part of the entry donation you will get access into the gold museum which has a replica golden eagle, as you can see by Miss B’s face she was pretty excited about it (and she knows how much time and patience it takes prospecting).
Oasis recreational centre
So, if you didn’t take my advice and avoid summer, or had no choice and it is so hot, you think you are melting!
Head into Oasis recreational centre which has indoor pools and play area, as well as an outdoor water slide for an extra fee (when available/manned).
Boulder, historic main street
Well worth the visit, step back in time on the main street of Boulder.
There is a market on the third Sunday of the month, you may want to plan your trip around as an added extra.
Be sure to start planning your road trip to Kalgoorlie soon.
