Gold Prospecting in Kalgoorlie

Where better to break in your new minelab detector than the Goldfields.

Arriving this week in the Goldfields of Western Australia, with our new mining rights

Mining Rights for Prospecting

licences, we knew we were ready to roll!

Friends of ours were already here and recommended the Prospector Caravan Park in Kalgoorlie  (anyone looking to stay, you get a discount for acclaim membership).

Being predominately free campers – Miss B was very excited to have a pool, reliable electricity, not just solar, and friends in the park to play with!

Training required

We have had our minelab detector for a while but due to extensive travelling both here and overseas have not had a chance to ‘get to know each other’.

Gold Prospecting in Kalgoorlie

What better way to learn both prospecting tips and our detector than take a tour with a local.  So after checking reviews and word of mouth, we found Dean from Gold Prospecting Kalgoorlie who has been prospecting for over 8 years.

You are collected at 7:30am on the morning of your booking and set off to the designated area for the day.  If you do not have your own detector, you can hire one for the day.  We actually got to take our hilux, better known as ‘sexy beast’ due to all three of us going and not being able to fit.  Loved getting her off road and also having our personal fridge (Miss B never stops eating so backup is a good thing lol).

Getting started Gold Prospecting in Kalgoorlie

On arrival on site, you will be fitted to your machine, given a GPS and two way radio, any questions answered and your off!

What did we take

Suitable footwear

Long sleeves / long pants for sun protection, brushing against plants and bushes and kneeling on ground

Small trowel, scoop

Mining right licence

Hat

Sunscreen

Small Pick

Metal Detector

NO JEWELLERY/WATCHES

G-Spot

We knew Gold was out there but do you think we could find it! Maybe a good indication of our sense of humour (good or bad) but we were having a chuckle that we were in search of the G-spot and were having trouble finding it LOL!!  Learning lots about geology, geography and gold on the way.

Great day out, yes it’s hot, so prepare accordingly.  Dean provides morning tea and lunch.  There are flies and lots of them so in my opinion flynets are important.

What did we find

Tin and lots of it.

Washers, nails,

shotgun pellets,

shotgun shells,

wire ….. but on this occasion no Gold!!

Metal Detectors

We believe in investing in good equipment and we bought a Minelab GPZ7000 detector.  We asked Dean what sort of detector he would recommend for those considering getting started (kids or adults) for finding money and jewellery in parks or beaches and he recommended the Equinox 600. They are available at Anaconda nationwide.

The Equinox 800 will detect gold as well, so for those looking at a bit more serious detecting that may be worth looking at.

There are rules on where you can prospect.  When you get your mining right licence from Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety they will show you how to identify where you are allowed to prospect.  They also provide maps and details on health and safety while prospecting.  All very important you are generally in remote areas, its hot and there are mine shafts and other dangers to take very seriously.

Overall we had a great day, learnt lots and can not wait to get out there again!
