Norway Fjords Trekking & Amazing Scenery

Norway Fjords Trekking & Amazing Scenery -Norway shines!!

We are loving our time in Norway and the amazing scenery continues to impress us over

Norway landscape

and over again.  Words can not even express the constant WOW we have experienced making our way through this beautiful country.

Full of Treks that brought more amazing views, crossed a few bucket list items off and so proud of Miss B for her effort and achievement.

VERY IMPORTANT! Do not forget before you begin roadtripping Norway to sign up for a toll account!  They are everywhere and visitors with foreign cars can register for an account with an email and then pay when invoiced.  This does not happen for about 3 months, but it will come.

July 10

Leaving Oslo we went past the ski run from the Winter Olympics and boy oh boy, they are so brave it is a long way up!

As we have pointed out before we make sure we have at least 3 meals on board at any one time in most countries, in Norway due to the expense we normally have 6.  Three fresh or meat dishes and three dry goods (pasta, tuna, noodles ect) so we have found KIWI have quite good (for Norway) prices and a great marinade selection that I can mix with most meats to jazz things up a little.  Generally we will stop when we see one and restock.

Making our way towards Kjeragbolten for our first trek.  We were all pretty pumped to get them underway. Having been talking about them for so long it was great to actually be doing it!

We stopped by a dam, where some sheep became very friendly.  Another day visitor caught a small trout with his hands from a small creek and he was so beautiful (the trout lol).  The mumma sheep wanted water so we shared some and she then alerted us to a new visitor, a beautiful Fox!! By the time we got our lens out he had moved a ways off but Brett still managed to capture this memory and his beautiful bushy tail!!  Wonderful memories for all of us.

July 11

The drive into Kjeragbolten was so memorable (and not just cause I took a million pictures) there was no wind, so all the mountains in the morning light were reflecting in the lakes and pools and it really was something else.  Norway is by far our most beautiful country, just no letting up, beautiful, beautiful and more beautiful (in summer anyway).

I have done a separate blog post and youtube videos for each of our hikes so as not to try and cram it all into the weekly wrap.  So if hiking is your thing here is our blog post on our Hiking Trolltunga Kjeragbolten & Preikestolen and youtube video here for Kjeragbolten.

We loved climbing to the boulder suspended 1000m up from the Fjord and so pumped we got out on the rock.  Trust me it is a long way up – do not look down!

This trek was a little over 9km and lots of rock climbing action (hands and feet required) which we all loved.

Perfect weather, early start meant this was really enjoyable.

Kjeragbolten

Leaving there our Tom Tom (GPS) took us down the hill (full of hairpins and zig zags)

Norway Fjord

which meant unless we were prepared to go back up the hill (plus a 2.5hr drive) and take an alternate route we were catching the tourist ferry.  The mere fact they put the word ‘tourist’ in front of it was scary enough! (basically meaning you are going to pay for this one!!)  So imagine our thoughts (or expletives) when they said it will be 1300kr to get to Frosand.  Yikes!!

We must admit the guy was lovely, explaining the other route if we wanted to take Betsy back up the multiple hairpin turns to the top and take the two and a half hour journey round.

Not one to take tourist anything, we thought we are here, we really didn’t want to put

Preikestolen from the Fjord

Betsy through that again (or us) and paid the ferry man, to get us to the other side (before getting there I might add!)  The ferry ride was lovely and as a bonus we got to see both Kjeragbolten and Preikestolen from the Fjord.

Accidental Ferry ride

While on the ferry Miss B got locked in the toilet by a faulty lock.  She is not the best in enclosed places, and I went looking for her after she took longer than expected to return.  The captain had been called and they were trying to bust her out.  Long story short, she was VERY relieved to see mum.  With the added bonus of the captain, bringing her an ice cream (a BIG luxury in Norway where they are so expensive we have called a halt till hitting Estonia).  She now wants to get locked in more toilets in the hope for more ice cream.

Arriving in Forsand and straight to our wild camp.  Everyone at the wild camp was climbing Preikestolen the next day and it was a great vibe. Miss B found another girl around her age from Germany and they played for hours.

July 12

Up early, and off to climb Preikestolen.  Again if you want more details than the basic read blog post of our Hiking Trolltunga Kjeragbolten & Preikestolen and find its youtube video here Preikestolen.

Great weather again, so happy! Not a great deal of parking at the top and either park there or overflow (800m away) is 200kr, so be early!

Lot more structured path and all ages friendly.  Hiking Sticks were great as was our

Cake and Eat it 3 on Preikestolen

lifestraw drink bottle.

Scenery as you would expect and the view at Pulpit Rock or Preikestolen is amazing.

Definitely be early to avoid crowds and get the photos you want.  There are some great spots up higher looking down on the rock to check out while up there for keen hikers.

Caught a ferry across to Nesvik and found a wild camp for the night.  Got washing done, showers and washed our hair out the back of van, overlooking the fjord.  Magic.  Later another van pulled in and we met a guy from New Zealand and his English girlfriend.  He later popped back with 4 mackeral he had caught and asked if we wanted them, so I got my fish filleting skills on from back in the day and got them ready for dinner the next day (we had already eaten).  They were so yummy, cooked them in garlic butter sauce.  What a treat!

July 13

We decided to have a couple of days rest before taking on the big one (Troll Tunga) and made our way towards Tyssedal.

Stopped and checked out Langfossen Falls which were lovely and if approached from the side we did we avoided the toll by 200m!

Fjords of Norway

Passing so much picture perfect or postcard scenery it is easy to become complacent.  It truly is spectacular.

Wild Camping it not far from Tyssedal we were lucky to find wild raspberries.  A lot of Norway at this time of year has them so keep an eye out!! They are amazing so sweet and full of flavour, don’t be fooled by their petite size (reminded us of picking berries in Romania last year with our good friends).

While there we met a lovely couple from Germany and their dog and had a good chin wag.  As with a lot of wild camp and rest stop areas, there are information boards about the animals of the area which we always enjoy reading.

July 14

Due to all our mountain climbing we were delayed in getting the weekly wrap from the previous week up, so we drove to a sunny spot, put the solar blanket out and got to work on getting the blog post and youtube clip loaded.  Average reception meant this took longer than expected.

We had already spread Miss B English and math homework over two weeks.  Mainly due to how much physical exercise we were doing.  Not to mention the overload of history, geography and story writing she had been doing.

Early to bed and picked a place to camp about 1km from the road up to Trolltunga. Great being self contained – leave no trace.

July 15

The big day, up really early and headed up towards Troll Tunga.  You can read all about the details on our Hiking Trolltunga Kjeragbolten & Preikestolen and find its youtube video here Trolltunga.

Great weather so happy all 3 treks and we got great weather for all of them!

Incredibly proud of Miss B what an achievement.  The scenery in Hardangerfjord is really special and we after talking about doing Troll Tunga for so long it was great to finally tick it off our list!

The ultimate shot Trolltunga

A big moment for Miss B sitting on the edge of the Trolls Tongue! (After great debate and negotiation).

Never has a scotch and coke tasted so good on my return to the car!  Great vibe around the car park with everyone pretty happy they had completed the trek.

We were all really looking forward to a sleep in.

July 16

Nice easy day driving north, catching ferries, waterfalls, meeting new friends and Miss B loving some down time playing on a playground with Dad.

We are killing it with our reading list already onto The Silver Chair (Chronicles of Narnia) Miss B and Mum share a chapter each and reading is M&M time. The whole family listens and discusses the books.

Heading further north in Norway absolutely loving our time here until next week…..

What did we take

What we took, electronics, kitchen and all things we needed for the duration of our roadtrip click here. (we are slowly adding each week as we have data/time)

Having done a three and half month roadtrip last year in South Europe and 5 months in UK & Northern Europe in 2018 we were pretty confident in what we would need’this time. Also, what worked and what we would not bother taking again.
