Cape to Cape Track Western Australia

Hiking Australia

The who, what , where , when of our Cape to Cape track

Brett, Miss B (12) and I, undertook the Cape to Cape track independently from 8 - 14 December 2019, along with our compact and trusty Cape to Cape guidebook from walkingtwobytwo

For those of you wanting to go with a group or organised tour, they are available through companies like Cape to Cape Explorer Tours and Inspiration Outdoors

We drove our vehicle to Augusta and left it with Cy from South West driving services.  He dropped us to Cape Naturaliste lighthouse, where we began our trek North to South (towards our car).

As we did not have vehicle support in Western Australia and due to the time of year, we wanted to ensure the security of our vehicle which is fully loaded for full time travel. Also, it means we were able to be collected at the end of the trek, in a timely manner. (You are approx 7km from town)

We have been told that many people have parked their car at Cape Naturaliste to complete the End to End Cape to Cape track with no issues at all.  It is recommended that you let the lighthouse know.

Cape to Cape Track what and where

cape to cape trekA 135km track along the sensational southwest coastline of Western Australia from Cape Naturaliste to Cape Leeuwin.

For the most part of your hike, you will take in the amazing Indian ocean in all its glory.

However, you will also experience beautiful jarrah and karri forests, have a variety of ground terrain to navigate including rocks, sand and dirt.

Through hike or Sectional

The track can be completed in a through hike North to South, or South to North.  There are pros and negatives to each route.  We hiked North to South and felt we made the right decision at that time of year.  Cape to Cape track can be also be done in sectional day or overnight hikes.

Food on the track

Knowing weight is a big issue on through hikes, I spent the time to try my hand at dehydrating and was VERY happy with the result.  We had meals like chow mein, spaghetti bolognese and Tomato & Basil rice with chorizo.  Everyone was really happy with the food we ate.

There are youtube videos showing the food we took and my first foray into dehydrating for those novices like me who want to give it a go.

Keeping Clean / Personal Hygiene

So no matter what sort of travel you are doing, personal hygiene is important.

Washing you

There are minimal places along the track that you can have a cold shower outside, including Yallingup & Gracetown.  If you stay in Yallingup Beach Holiday Park or Hamelin Bay Holiday Park, you can have a hot shower at a price of course.

In between these times, we had baby wipes and have a F.A.B shower - Face, Under arms and Bottom (in

that order!)

NB: Remember ladies there are no sanitary disposal on the track, take adequate wipes and scented nappy bags with you, as you will have to hang on to all rubbish on the track. Leave no trace.

Washing clothes

If you have a scrubba washbag you can easily wash your clothes and hang them off your pack while you walk.  Also great as a wet bag when not in use.

Great friend for hikers and campers alike.  Quick dry clothing is excellent for this style of travelling.

Campsites

There are a number of designated campsites on, or a short detour off the Cape to Cape track.  We recommend a tent as there are no cabins available.  We understand the weight issue.  Other track walkers used a tarp and we were fortunate to have perfect (if not a little hot) weather but would not be very nice if it rained.

Water was available at all camp sites first week of December.  The facebook group Cape to Cape (Western Australia) are a fantastic resource for track condition, information and meeting fellow hikers!
