Hiking Beraking Hut to Brookton Hut on the Bibbulmun Track

Kids on the Bibbulmun

Day 4 of our adventure and we are hiking Beraking Hut to Brookton Hut on the Bibbulmun Track, a total of 19.3km.

Clocking up the kilometres now.  A total of just over 71km by the end of today, day 4, onBibbulmun landscape the Bibbulmun! Let’s not concentrate on how many are left to go!

We were all feeling pretty good. You can definitely tell each day of hiking, you are getting track fit/pack fit and not hurting as much.

No matter where you are on the track, it is beautiful and ever changing.

Love everything about the bush

Happy to reach Mt Dale hut

There isn’t one part better or worse than another.  But, on the way to Mt Dale Hut today there was a hill.  Not just any hill, a hill FULL of bullants.  Not at the beginning of the day when your all fresh and spritely either.

Now, the good part about this – we were pretty unmotivated to climb the hill.

The ants helped with this issue, a LOT.

Then there was a section I named honkey nut hell.  You guessed it, honkey nuts everywhere and watching your footing very carefully, to remain up right at all times, was important.

Singing commences

Luckily, there was not many people on the track today!  As we began singing.  Brett was very thankful he was up ahead, on snake watch as usual.  Miss B and I had a blast changing words and incorporating the Bibbulmun where possible.  I apologise in advance, for anyone watching Dy 4 youtube video. Clearly, I am not a singer.  But we were having a blast.

Arriving at Brookton Hut

Huts on the Bibbulmun track
Brookton Hut

Another quality hut, this one with a shared raised bed platform in an L.

All of them you could wipe down if your were fussy but we found them to be tidy, brooms on hand to sweep if required and our sleeping mats cop most of it.

solar lights for camping

When we stop, we take off our shoes and socks straight away, to air them out.

Wipe down our feet with nappy wipes and allow enough time to dry them out before bed.

Dinner is normally organised in the daylight and cleaning all sorted so there is no excess use of torches.

We have a Luci inflatable camp light which is brilliant and we recommend them, light, solar charged – off your pack while you hike and compact.

Hut Journals

Miss B journal entry

Every hut has a journal that hikers and campers can write or draw notes in.

This is one of our favourite times once we have relaxed, beds made, dinner sorted.

Reading all the tales, limmericks, hiking experiences and observations.

Miss B entered her favourite kindness poem and a couple of drawings – a parrot bush and black boy, which we have seen a lot of, on our hike.

Dehydrating meals pays off

Hiking food
Confused Chicken dinner

After hiking for hours there is nothing better than looking forward to your meals.  Miss B is  a BIG food lover and I knew this could make or break the enjoyment of our hike.  When I dehydrated for our Cape to Cape hike this was a HUGE positive and we all looked forward to every nights dinner.  This is paying off again this hike and tonight was confused Spanish chicken.

I say confused as it was part mexican spices but mainly Spanish flavours.  It was really nice but next time I will shred the chicken not leave in pieces as it was a little tough.  Details in our dehydrating blog post.

Extra Information you may want to know

The Bibbulmun Track is one of the world’s great long distance walk trails.  The track stretches a mere (?) 1000km from Kalamunda in the Perth Hills, to Albany on the south coast of Western Australia.

We left on our hike from Kalamunda (Northern Terminus) on the 13th March 2020.

There was lots of preparation, planning and packing and dehydrating and excitement in the lead up to our hike!

This REALLY made the hike more enjoyable and all future hikes we will ensure more hydrating of meals is done in advance and sent ahead.
