Hiking Helena Hut to Beraking – Bibbulmun Track Adventures

Family Hiking

Feeling Refreshed

Huts on the Bibbulmun

Staying the night in the deluxe Helena Hut was fantastic. Washing done thanks to our Scrubba Washing bag. Also, it is worth noting, if there was not a full tank and had been raining you would not use the water in the tanks, for washing clothes.

A good nights sleep and a great dinner (SO worth the planning & preparation).

We were ready to hit the track Helena Hut to Beraking and would be walking a total of 18.3km.

Once we get there we will have completed 51.9km and only about 947km to go!

Even the toilet is fancy at Helena Hut and we made sure to use it, before setting off.  Someone had a sense of humour, positioning it up the top of the hill.  Away from the sleeping area!!

Great for the smell factor not so good for sore muscles!

Oh the muscles! Made to warm up in the morning climbing that hill.

Hitting the track

Off we set and once the muscles got warmed up, we were as good as gold.  Everyone wasHiking between Helena Hut and Beraking in high spirits and all of us relieved Miss B’s blister, was healing well.

The bush is so beautiful.  While hiking, you find the time whizzes by, as you watch birds dance about the bushes and trees.

That and concentrating on swatting flies, dodging honkey nuts and not slipping on pea size gravel!

Weather can make or break your hike

March in Perth, Western Australia is not necessarily hiking weather.  In fact, most would generally say wait till April if you can.

We were absolutely blessed this day with overcast weather and light showers which was refreshing.  Wearing the right hiking attire, quick dry clothes, means this was not an issue at all.

Blisters

When hiking the health of your feet is very important.  It is very important to keep on top of any issues, take them seriously and be prepared for any scenario.

Miss B has not had issues with blisters on any previous hikes. It was because she wanted to wear her relatively new boots.  They have recovered so well with careful care, draining of the blister, re-dressing with the Scholl blister pack I spoke about in Day 2 post

Please remember to check your feet every night and if there are any red or inflamed spots put some fixomull tape on it to prevent from progressing.

Benefits of Hiking as a family

Benefits of hikingApart from obviously health benefits, breathing fresh air, reducing screen time and working as a team.

The one on one attention with your kids, without distraction, in nature, is absolutely priceless.

It doesn’t matter how many hikes we do, there is more to see, more to learn and we always start planning the next one before finishing the one we are on!

Extra Information you may want to know

The Bibbulmun Track is one of the world’s great long distance walk trails.  The track stretches a mere (?) 1000km from Kalamunda in the Perth Hills, to Albany on the south coast of Western Australia.

We left on our hike from Kalamunda (Northern Terminus) 13 March 2020.

There was lots of preparation, planning and packing and dehydrating and excitement in the lead up to our hike! This REALLY made the hike more enjoyable and all future hikes we will ensure more hydrating of meals is done in advance and sent ahead.
