Day 8 hiking on the Bibbulmun Track, Gringer Creek to Mt Wells, a big 32km day.

Still smiling on Day 8

Started strong and all in good spirits. Can’t say I finished the same way LOL!

Another double hutter day, this time through White Horse Hills hut at the mid way point (16km).

Now, if there is one thing we have learned, if the name of the hut has Hill or Mount in it – be prepared for muscle burn.

But as you are track fit by now it is not crippling, you just are really really aware you walked 32kms and it was not flat.

Getting started each day on the Bibbulmun Track

Generally we wake up at 5-5:30am and immediately pack up our sleeping bags and sleeping mats into our packs.

Breakfast normally consists of Carmen muesli bars, porridge or protein bars.  It is our least favourite meal of the day and don’t really mind as we are keen to hit the track and get moving.

Filling of water bottles is vital, you will regret it if you forget and it is a last check before leaving a camp.

White Horse Hills Hut

Hitting half way saw us eat lunch at White Horse Hills hut.  Really enjoyed taking off the hiking boots and letting feet cool down, especially knowing we are in for another 16kms.

Was feeling pretty good at this stage and not too concerned about the second leg.

Really enjoy our lunch of vita weats with John West tuna and bean mix, it is very filling and seems to sustain us well, even Brett.

Charging our devices

As you can imagine, trying to capture our Bibbulmun Track adventure on video has been a

challenge.  There are so many amazing views, scenery and experiences that we want to share with you and I am so glad Brett is my pack horse!

Well, to be honest, it is quite remarkable that he is carrying such a heavy pack and NEVER complains.

To keep things charged as we go, we have brought our Goal Zero Nomad 14+ solar charger.  This has ensured I keep powered up and Miss B keeps her walkman charged, phones charged which have our apps ect on them.  We did a review on them on our youtube channel if you want more info click here.

We also have two Goal Zero flip power banks with us, but we would not recommend them.  Just because of the flip design is impractical and needs additional cord to use (which we had).

Any power bank would do and one of the most popular seem to be an Anker powercore or similar.

Heat & Hydration on Bibbulmun Track

Whatever time of year you do the Bibbulmun Track be sure to take hydration seriously. Enjoy the hike Especially on these long days of hiking it can really affect your enjoyment of your hike.

Be sure to take regular rest breaks if required and time to take in the amazing scenery, it is not a race.

Miss B & I really were feeling it by the time we hit Mt Wells due to a very warm day.

Mt Wells Hut

Staying at Mt Wells Hut
Mt Wells Hut

What felt like an eternity getting up that last hill or mountain – Mt Wells hut was a lovely sight!

A little cottage on a hill with a tower.  Great stop, would definitely want to have a tent in case of a more than 5 hikers sleeping overnight.

Relaxed, climbed the tower. The original tower wasWatch tower at Mt Wells destroyed in the January Dwellingup fires in 1961.

The replacement tower was first manned from 2nd January 1962 – can not believe my aching feet made it up there and down again!!

We crashed early ready for another day of hiking tomorrow, but really enjoyed Gringer creek to Mt Wells on the Bibbulmun Track.

Extra Information you may want to know

The Bibbulmun Track is one of the world’s great long distance walk trails.  The track stretches a mere (?) 1000km from Kalamunda in the Perth Hills, to Albany on the south coast of Western Australia.

We left on our hike from Kalamunda (Northern Terminus) on the 13th March 2020.

There was lots of preparation, planning and packing and dehydrating and excitement in the lead up to our hike!

This REALLY made the hike more enjoyable and all future hikes we will ensure more hydrating of meals is done in advance and sent ahead.
