Bibbulmun Track Adventure with kids
Setting off on Day 5, double hutting Brookton to Monadnocks hut, a total of 27.5kms.
Double hutting means, walking past or through a hut, without stopping for the night.
Feet were hurting last night and we were ever so thankful to hit Brookton hut and take our hiking shoes off, added bonus – discovering beautiful water too.
Snottygobble
No, I am not cursing at you! You could be forgiven for thinking this is something out of a Roald Dahl book like the BFG!
It is actually a species of flowering plant in the family Proteaceae and endemic to the southwest of Western Australia.
It is a shrub or small tree characterised by it’s weeping foliage, yellow flowers and flaky bark. And we were on the lookout for it today, while hiking. It is also known as a sought out bush tucker option.
Canning Hut
Doing a double hut always sounds like a good idea!
Or essential, if you are doing North to South end to end. There has to be a couple double huts, to be able to carry all your food and gear with you over what is essentially 10 days of hiking.
Then you hit Dwellingup and have the opportunity to restock.
We used our time at Canning Hut to eat lunch and let our feet breathe.
This really works to reduce swelling and helps alleviate rubbing caused from your toes hitting the tops of your hiking shoes when they swell from heat/walking. It does not take long and totally worth the 10-15 minutes, while you are enjoying the bush and eating your lunch.
Red Tailed Black Cockatoos
While on the track today we came across a beautiful collection of red tailed black cockatoos in a clearing. A great bonus on this stretch Brookton hut to Monadnocks.
Tried to film for you in the youtube video I am sure it does not do them justice.
So beautiful, the males have a straight red in tail and the females have a orange mix with black markings.
Trees down
There are a number of reasons you will come across felled trees on the track. Today we came across one that has been enjoyed by a whole lot of termites. It was huge!
It is possible it could have been taken down for safety after being attacked by the termites or fallen down in a storm because of the damage.
One thing is for sure, nature is amazing and looking at the size of the tree, these termites set out with big goals!
Occupying yourself on the hike
There is no shortage of flora to keep you entertained while hiking. But, I am going to warn you, those who watch our youtube videos, there is more singing today!
Just a bit of fun, don’t say you weren’t warned.
Getting Wet is all part of the hike
About one and a half hours out of Monadnocks, the heavens opened and we got wet.
We had been pretty lucky not to have had any rain so far and as we had been walking most of the day it was nice to cool down.
When we arrived at Monadnocks hut, we quickly
removed wet clothing, got warm and had a warm drink. This early in our End to End attempt, it would not be good to get a cold.
We hung our packs up to dry off – there are hooks in most, if not all huts (haven’t seen them all…yet).
Great Telstra reception at this hut!
Love dinner time – dehydrating totally worth it
Dinner tonight is Spaghetti Bolognese with gouda cheese – this has lasted no problem at all and we just cut chunks off it and throw in once cooked through, to melt – YUMMO!
This spaghetti bolognese, I had vermicelli and it totally worked, light, quick to re-hydrate.
We will have no problems doing this again. We also did some with actually dehydrated cooked spaghetti, which was great too. This will save you time if in a hurry to prepare for your hike.
Met a lovely guy, who was familiar with the area and had a chat before settling in for evening. Snug as a bug in our sleeping bags. Ahhhhh, so good to get off your feet!
Great day of hiking Brookton hut to Monadnocks hut!
Extra Information you may want to know
The Bibbulmun Track is one of the world’s great long distance walk trails. The track stretches a mere (?) 1000km from Kalamunda in the Perth Hills, to Albany on the south coast of Western Australia.
We left on our hike from Kalamunda (Northern Terminus) on the 13th March 2020.
There was lots of preparation, planning and packing and dehydrating and excitement in the lead up to our hike!
This REALLY made the hike more enjoyable and all future hikes we will ensure more hydrating of meals is done in advance and sent ahead.
